The USF Health Department of Cardiovascular Sciences was well represented June 20 to 24 at the American Society of Echocardiography’s Annual Scientific Sessions meeting in Portland, OR.
The Department’s six presentations included two original contributions by cardiology fellows Dr. Aarti Patel and Dr. Catherine Law, as well as four faculty assignments for Dr. Arthur Labovitz, professor and departmental chair.

On Sunday, June 22, Dr. Law presented the poster “Paradoxically High Gradient Parallel to Aortic Valve Plane On Transesophageal Echocardiogram in TAVR Patients.”
On Monday, June 23, Dr. Patel presented the poster “Atypical Presentation Should Prompt Evaluation of Coronary Artery Disease in Patients Undergoing Non-invasive Stress Testing.”
Dr. Arthur Labovitz, chair of Cardiovascular Sciences was invited to give an oral presentation and served as a proctor and chair for scientific sessions.
Dr. Labovitz served as a proctor for the session “Maintenance of Certification by Case-based Echocardiography” on June 20, and co-chaired a discussion about “Ethics and Dilemmas in the Practice of Echocardiography” on June 22. He was a contestant in a game of “Echo Jeopardy.”
Dr. Labovitz spoke on the topic “Competency Training in Echocardiography: Special Competency in Echo is an Archaic Idea in the Era of Point of Care Echo” on Tuesday, June 24.
