Dr. Smith, assistant professor of psychiatry and medical director of the USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute, was appointed Oct. 3 by State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong.

The Board is a component of the new Ed and Ethel Moore Alzheimer’s Disease Research Program and will advise the State Surgeon General on the scope and direction of the new program and grant appropriations and proposals, and will oversee the mechanisms for the dissemination of research results. The Ed and Ethel Moore Alzheimer’s Disease Research Program will award research grants through a competitive, peer-reviewed process that will identify and fund proposals to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, and expand Alzheimer’s disease research in this state.

Members of the Board represent the many specialties with close connections to Alzheimer’s; Dr. Smith is one of two geriatric psychiatrists.
