Community and Family Health secures COPH’s first PCORI grant

In partnership with community care and social services, USF College of Public Health researcher Sheri Eisert, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Community and Family Health, is leading a study examining opportunities for preventing neonatal abstinence syndrome, a group of conditions that affect newborns who were exposed to addictive opiate drugs while in the womb and, once born, experience symptoms of withdrawal because they are no longer getting the drugs.

The study, titled “Developing a Community Partnership Focused on Prevention of Opiate-Exposed Newborns,” was provided by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, or PCORI, an independent, non-profit organization authorized by Congress in 2010. The new grant is the USF College of Public Health’s first from PCORI and Dr. Eisert is one of 47 small groups and individuals in 20 states and Puerto Rico selected by PCORI to share nearly $700,000 in grants for community-building projects through its Pipeline to Proposal awards program.

“We’re very excited to get the college’s first PCORI grant,” Dr. Eisert said. “We hope this will evolve into the second phase, because the second phase of the Pipeline is to go into developing a research proposal with the community.  So, we’re excited to have that opportunity.  We’re in a progression to get more funding now.”
