Because of his efforts and many contributions in building health equity, social justice and community activism, Adewale Troutman, MD, MPH, CPH, professor and associate dean for Health Equity and Community Engagement in the USF College of Public Health, recently received the inaugural award that was named in his honor.

Called the Adewale Troutman Social Justice Award, the honor is a joint award from the City University of New York’s (CUNY) Institute for Health Equity and the CUNY School of Public Health. The goal of the award is “to recognize a student who embodies the social justice and health equity values exemplified throughout Dr. Troutman’s career, and who is committed to pursuing these values through a career in public health or health related services,” noted the announcement of the award.
The inaugural award was presented to Dr. Troutman earlier this summer and future awards will be given to students currently enrolled in one of The CUNY School of Public Health campuses or Health Sciences Programs. At the presentation ceremony, Dr. Troutman matched the $1,000 award amount for next year’s recipient.
Dr. Troutman has more than four decades of work founded on principles of universal freedoms and the elimination of racism, injustice and oppression, and an educational journey that played a major factor in his work and life: an MD degree from New Jersey Medical School, a master’s degree in public health from Columbia University, a master’ degree s in Black Studies from the State University of New York in Albany, and board certification from the National Board of Public Health Examiners.
Etched on the face of Dr. Troutman’s award are the words “May Scholars who receive this award draw wisdom and inspiration from your countless contributions to national and global health.”
