Fourth-year medical student Daniel Restrepo recently received the Francis J. Flannery Medicine Award, a scholarship aimed at select senior medical students who have a driving interest in internal medicine.
Restrepo was presented with the award earlier in December by Michael Flannery, MD, FACP, professor of medicine for the USF Morsani College of Medicine and founder of the scholarship named after his father. Dr. Flannery, who is a USF medical school alum and long-time faculty member, established the award to help fill the pipeline for promising primary care physicians.
The Francis J. Flannery Medicine Award is one of seven scholarships Dr. Flannery has established: three at USF, three at Tampa General Hospital, and one at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School. The scholarships are named after his children, father, mother and grandparents and benefit medical students, nursing students, pharmacy students and TGH environmental control staff and hospital janitors who want to go back to school.
“The bottom line is that I feel I should give back,” Dr. Flannery said. “I would encourage our faculty to support our students and residents as much as possible.”
The Francis J. Flannery Medicine Award, which provided Restrepo with $1,000, is based on knowledge and judgment, professional behavior, humanistic attributes, extracurricular involvement, including community service, and financial need. Restrepo is active in several organizations, including serving as Community Service co-chair for the USF chapter of the American Medical Association Medical Student Section and the Executive Board for the USF Morsani College of Medicine Class of 2014.
