USF dermatology residents sweep awards at state research symposium

USF Health physician dermatology residents swept the awards at the recent Resident and Fellow Research Symposium, part of the annual meeting of the Florida Society of Dermatologic Surgeons (FSDS) held in Palm Beach, FL, in October. In addition, USF dermatologist Basil Cherpelis, MD, associate professor and chief of Dermatologic Surgery at USF Health, was elected president of the FSDS for 2014.

First place went to Nishit Patel, MD, a first-year resident. His work is titled “’BAP1-loss melanocytic tumors:  A case and review of the literature.” USF attending physicians on the project are Jane Messina, MD, and Neil Fenske, MD.

Second place went to Nicole Howe, MD, a fourth-year resident. Her work is titled “Use of onaboutlinumtoxinA in persistent facial flushing.” USF attending physicians on the project are Nicole Hogue and Neil Fenske, MD.

And third place when to Hoka Nyanda, MD, fourth-year resident. Her work is titled “Topical Timolol and Oral Prednisone for Treatment of Infantile Hemangiomas.” The USF attending physician on the project was Christopher Nelson, MD.

Symposium judges looked primarily at five criteria: type of study (original work or review of literature), objectives, methodology, presentation, and significance/originality. The meeting is held every year for residents and fellows from inside and outside Florida to present their research and each presentation is scored by leaders in dermatologic surgery.
